Why does a fire truck show up when an ambulance is requested?
Fire apparatus response to ambulance calls occur for a variety of reasons. DG ambulances are staffed with two personnel. The additional personnel responding on fire apparatus are utilized to assist with moving equipment to the patient, providing patient care, and patient movement. The additional personnel allow for more efficient patient care and transport.
Very often the ambulance housed at the closest fire house may be busy on a previous call. When this occurs the fire engine or truck from the closest station is dispatched along with the ambulance from the next closest station. The crew assigned to the fire apparatus begins patient care while awaiting the ambulances arrival.
In some instances multiple fire apparatus may respond to ambulance requests when even more manpower is required. This can occur due to crews encountering difficlty in accessing and/or moving the patient safely.
